Things to be Very Afraid of in 2012

The Star Tribune has come out with its “12 Things to Look Forward to in 2012” list, critic Chris Riemenschneider’s recommendations for musical events to get excited about this year.

It’s not a bad list. His No. 1 choice is the Valentine’s Day CD release party at First Ave. for Poliça, the new band featuring ex-Roma di Luna-turned-Gayngs singer Channie Casselle (now Leaneagh)…

Review: Les Miserables @ The Orpheum Theatre

LesMisLowRes.jpgMuch has been made of the fact that the national tour of Les Misérables is a new production, in honor of the show’s 25th anniversary. I went with some trepidation, having loved the original production, which I saw several times over the last two decades. I worried that the retooling of this beloved…

British Advertising Awards @ Walker Art Center

Every December, the Walker Art Center pays homage to the art of advertising by screening the British Advertising Awards, an entertaining compendium of the year’s best telly ads from across the pond—where, as everyone knows, everything is cleverer, due to the fact that drinking heavily at lunch in England is highly encouraged.

This year the event has been renamed the British Arrows Awards, partly to…

Review: 1968 @ Minnesota History Center

The moment you step into the Minnesota History Center’s new
exhibit, 1968, you will be

We continue to tell these tales, but something often gets lost in the translation to the modern world, making the lessons of the…

Minnesota Opera’s Cosi fan Tutte @ Ordway Center

0624.jpgWhen it was announced some time ago that Peter Rothstein, artistic director of Theatre Latte Da, would be directing Minnesota Opera’s production of Mozart’s Cosi fan Tutte, a great deal of excitement was suddenly generated for an opera that might otherwise have been regarded as just another show.

Rothstein is generally regarded as…

The 2011 Ivey Awards

Last night, the Ivey Awards for local theater continued its hallowed tradition of honoring pretty much every musical produced in town last year. The opening number alone—a shout-out to costume designers—contained characters from Annie, Hairspray, H.M.S. Pinafore, Avenue Q, and several other productions, all packed onto the stage in a boffo bearhug of self-congratulation.

Which is entirely appropriate for the Iveys. The awards are a…

Review: Baby Marx @ Walker Art Center

Thumbnail image for MarxLoRes2.jpgEvery once in a while an art exhibit comes along that touches a nerve, but what you really want it to do is jab a white-hot spike into the root and inflict as much howling agony as possible.

Baby Marx, at the Walker Art Center, is one such exhibit. The…
