At an all-ages show coming straight off a couple gigs in the Midwest, the Heiruspecs got a warm welcome back to the Twin Cities last night at the Triple Rock. The band played crowd-pleasing songs off their two records, including "5ves" and "Two Fold," plus "Position of Strength," which they don't play live very often. But, as they did at last Wednesday's 21+ show at the Triple Rock, they also played new stuff from an upcoming, as yet untitled record—including a track you can hear a taste of on mspmag.com's video—and another new track, "Guns and Knives."

The group, whose last release was 2004's A Tiger Dancing, also played a few covers last night. Keyboardist DVRG shone on an Afrobeat Fela Kuti cover, and the group closed with Van Halen's "Jump"—spun Heiruspecs-style.

Another repeated treat from last Wednesday's show was a beatbox vs. drums session between mad beatboxer Muad'Dib and drummer Peter Leggett—who's played with Mason Jennings lately. Check out last week's version at mnstories.com.

Even if you're musically conservative, you can't help but get into a Heiruspecs show. Last night they got everyone's head bobbing and kept encouraging audience participation, even singling people out at times, until everyone was dancing or singing along with them. When the band asked the crowd to breakdance if they could, they had one taker. The crowd responded more heartily when asked to throw up their middle fingers for all the rappers they hate. These guys actually care if you're having a good time at their show—and if you like their music. Last night it was apparent everyone did.
