We caught up with Denny Kemp, owner of fabulously trendy Denny Kemp Salon in Minneapolis, to get the scoop about what is ‘à la mode’ in the world of hair this season.
About Denny Kemp
Originally Denny Kemp wanted to go into art and thought doing hair was going to be a temporary thing. “I seriously thought that I would be doing hair for about six months, you know to pay the rent, and that I would be fine,” he says.
But what he thought would be a short-lived position doing hair, blossomed into an amazing career.
Kemp started off working with Horst Rechelbacher as Creative Director for Horst Salons and later led to opening his own high-end salon in Northeast Minneapolis. “I think my appreciation for art helped me grow in this industry,” Kemp says. “You absolutely need to be creative.”
According to Kemp, the trending look right now is healthy and shiny hair with a pinch of different decades. Ombré coloring is in high demand this season, along with natural messy/curly ‘dos.
“We are falling into something right now that has a pinch of the ’80s, a pinch of the ’70s and it just gets mixed and stirred up,” Kemp says. “But hair should also be healthy.”
To get your hair in a healthy and happy state, Kemp says oil and deep conditioning treatments are key, especially going into the dry winter season in Minnesota. Plus, he advises to stick to a good stylist and product for healthy hair habits.
“It’s important to stay with a good hairdresser,” he says. “As a hairdresser, those clients who come in regularly become more and more important because you get to know them better and know what they like. It’s always evolving, you’re always taking them to something new.”
So what should we expect to see for the holiday season? Lots of messy up-dos.
And what products should we keep in our hair arsenal? Kemp recommends Shu Uemura as a great product line that will keep hair looking healthy and amazing. For those on a budget, Kemp suggests Bumble and Bumble as a fabulous alternative to use for beautiful hair.
