I was literally running late from the parking lot to a nondescript building in Northeast Minneapolis when I noticed I had company. A lady with a bright red bob and glasses asked me if I was there for The Shows. I said yes and we instantly bonded over the fact that we were both fashionably late (no pun intended). We made our way into the lobby of the Grain Belt Bottling House, where night three of The Shows for MNfashion Week (aka MSPFW 2012) was starting. Echoing the aesthetic of Emma Berg’s Spring 2013 line, the bare, minimalist space was the perfect backdrop. The seats lining the runway were filled for this highly anticipated show, but my new friend and I found a spot among the photographers already snapping away.
First up was Samantha Rei, who made her debut on the fashion scene back in 2000 with her label Blasphemina’s Closet. Her latest looks have a similar Alice-in-Wonderland feel to them, with fresh and bright color palette for spring.
Following Samantha Rei’s whimsical runway presentation, Emma Berg’s show was modern and sleek. The bold black and white was unexpected for spring (typically the season of pastels and florals), especially right now in the midst of print mania. Models paraded down the runway in their monochromatic, draped clothing, giving off an almost warrior-like vibe.
Toward the end of the second show, I found the brightly coiffed woman from the beginning of the evening. Having never attended The Shows before, we were both left with a similar impression: we liked them. Kudos to everyone involved in making fashion week such a success!
