Spring weather can be a temperamental mistress. With snow in the forecast one day and 90 degree weather the next, keeping your body the perfect temperature is a challenge. The trick is layering, but piling on a winter coat for chilly mornings and lugging it home in the afternoon is a major drag. Luckily, designers are responding to our warm-weather woes, and in the interest of both comfort and fashion have unleashed a variety of spring-ready jackets to fit into every woman’s wardrobe. Bright colors, lighter fabrics, and sleek cuts are now gracing stores from Forever21 to J.Crew. Take a look at these styles and pack away those winter coats for hibernation (at least until next fall).
Blazers have long evolved from their stuffy counterparts from yesteryear. Play up the color-blocking trend or add a pop of the unexpected with a brightly colored blazer. Look for lighter fabrics such as linen to stay (and look) extra cool.
We’ve already extolled the virtues of a trench, but it’s a classic for a reason—the cinching at the waist will flatter every body type, the waterproof fabric is light enough for warmer weather and still waterproof for those early-May showers, plus the khaki color will match every outfit. Keep it modern with contrasting piping or interesting accents, such as the leather detailing on this MICHAEL Michael Kors trench (above right).
If it’s good enough for Coco Chanel then it’s good enough for the rest of us. A tweed jacket in loud spring colors will look fresh and chic paired with nearly anything—be it shorts, jeans, a breezy dress, or a fitted pencil skirt. Shop for modern crew neck silhouettes to keep your tweed stylish, not stuffy.
If you believe leather jackets are just for fall and winter, think again. Light colored leather jackets will look great during the day or out at night. Look for accents such as studs, zippers, or quilting for an extra fashion-forward vibe.
