The crop top has been in and out of fashion since Madonna‘s mid-1980s video for “Lucky Star” first sparked the trend and inspired a thousand sit-ups. Thanks to pop icons such as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and the Spice Girls, the ’90s saw its fair share of bared midriffs as well, and now crop tops are resurfacing once more on the red carpet with stars pairing their short shirts with matching skirts.
The reviews so far have been mixed. Selena Gomez‘s sweet Dolce & Gabbana outfit at the kid’s choice awards has been lauded, while Katy Perry‘s slime-encased shirt and asymmetrical hem skirt were deemed a fashion-miss. Gwenyth Paltro and Miley Cyrus, both wearing Emilio Pucci‘s stomach-baring creations, also tried the trend to varied critical reception.
Crop tops are definitely not for the meek among us or for everyday office-wears. But if you are a bold fashionista with an eye to try the crop, here are a few guidelines to follow:
1. Do show the smallest part of you—an inch of midriff around your waistline can be flattering because it highlights your smallest point.
2. Don’t show too much skin. Think “peekaboo” not “peep show” to keep your hint of skin fun and fashion-forward.
3. Try mixing complementary prints à la Selena Gomez for an unexpected twist.
4. Keep your look clean and classic—an A-line silhouette is universally flattering for most body types, or pair your shirt with a maxi-length skirt and heels to add length to your frame.
So what’s the verdict—will you be copying the celebs and trying the crop trend or are you waiting for crops to fall from fashion grace?
