Model Citizen: Knitty Gritty Scarves

By Leah Binkovitz

Snow demands that you take sides. You’re either pro or con, enchanted by the winter wonderland or absolutely frozen.

But to ward off both the wintertime fashion blues and the more sinister and diagnosable frostbite, all you need is a cute scarf. (Warning: That’s not actually the only thing you need to ward off frostbite, please wear the rest of your outfit with this as well).

Even if you’ve started your own knit scarf seven times over the past three years and have yet to complete it, you can still claim the handmade look as your own.

It wasn’t hard to spot Tiffany amid the dull, down-feather parade around the skyways. With her bright J.Crew scarf wrapped artfully around her neck, she made staying warm look like more than a chore. Particularly eye-catching is the chunky, textured knit of her scarf.

You may remember from your brief days as a master-knitter that there are scores of patterns to follow that each lend the final product a unique look. Take these celebrity examples below, for instance; cable-knits aren’t just for sweaters and a loose, loopy knit can lend a funky, layered feel to an otherwise utilitarian accessory.

So yeah, the snow is a drag and you have to walk like an octogenarian to avoid falling in the middle of the crosswalk, but you can still love winter—or at least the clothes.
