Furniture: Mix It Up!

Shawn Gilliam

I'm often asked for ideas on mixing furniture of different styles to create a comfortable, personal look. It's tough to explain succinctly, but this two-minute video with Martha O'Hara from Martha O'Hara Interiors, shot in the living room, dining room, and kitchen at the Mpls.St.Paul Magazine Idea Home at the Minneapolis Home & Garden Show, does a pretty good job. You'll see how Martha's team brought traditional, transitional, and contemporary styles together, using a timeless palette of neutrals with pops of color. Enjoy!

One-liner Onesies

Christy DeSmith
It’s another one of those trends, folks. Hip, new parents (clad in vintage-style tees and with iPods running out of their ears) cling to the last vestiges of youth by swaddling their tots in onesies and T-shirts that bear cheeky slogans. Of course, it’s another one of those trends we enjoy—so we were delighted when, earlier this week, a conservation was sparked with a local master of the baby-with-bravado movement: Todd Turfler, printmaker and proprietor of St. Paul’s Rebel Ink Baby. Here are the outtakes:

Ask an Editor: Wallpaper Conundrum

Hi Style friends,  I really enjoy your design work in Mpls.St.Paul Magazine and on the website, especially with all the design mags recent demises!  I have a quick question.  A few months ago, I fell in love with some Designers Guild wallpaper that I wanted to use in our main floor's guest bathroom.  Just after that, I saw the same wallpaper in an East Harriet girls bedroom that you profiled online.  The wallpaper is amazing, and hard to forget, but is it worth it?  No one else who comes to our house is going to know how special it is!  Our house is a pretty regular suburban house with little natural charm.  I try to pretend it is the charming cottage of my dreams, but that is only in my head.  Should I try to find a less expensive alternative, (and if so, have you seen one) or should I just get the one I love?  Suggestions?

Thanks.
Lisa Sheppard Pearson

A literary masterwork this is not, but simply a snippet from the conversation two adult women recently had about beauty products. Becky Sturm from StormSister Spatique just introduced me to a fabulous, new sweet-smelling styling product made especially for frizzy-headed folks like me (see below). Once I was done expressing my gratitude, I decided to bat a few questions with Becky. Here goes:

When a friend of mine was married this past fall at The St. Paul Hotel, she wore the most amazing, mermaid-style gown with a scoop neck top and tiny buttons all the way down her back. It was one of those dresses that made me think, "Why would anyone go for a strapless ball gown when there is something like that out there?"

Sounds the alarms, sisters: StyledLife is closing its downtown Minneapolis location at Gaviidae Common. Of course, their flagship at the Edina Galleria will remain open... Starting tomorrow, everything at the downtown store will be 80-percent off. Everything except vintage jewelry, that is. (Twas my first question when the publicist called, about five minutes ago, to break the news.)
Even though conspicuous consumption is supposedly on the way out, I continue to delight in the thrill of the bargain hunt! Of all things, I take the most pleasure in finding designer clothes at Value Village, Everyday People, and other insanely cheap thrift stores. I can’t take full credit for my latest procurement, but here it is: Just this past weekend, my mother unearthed an asymmetrical and architectural Yohji Yamamoto jacket—she found it while we were sorting through racks full of secondhand Forever 21 at the local Everyday People (she and I frequent the place as part of Mom's ongoing quest for gently-used Coach). So, as I was saying: Mom found it, but I bought it! Price tag for my lovely, new jacket: just $25.

Ext4.JPGIt has been a pretty crazy week for my colleagues and me! We finished the Mpls.St.Paul Magazine Idea Home at the Minneapolis Home & Garden Show, and the response from the media and show attendees has been phenomenal. So phenomenal that I've been at the convention center for live TV at 5 a.m. twice so far this week!

Anyway, the charming cottage-style home (it's a real home, not some sort of stage set) was built in a Chanhassen warehouse by McDonald Construction and Carpentry Contractors. They disassembled it last week and then trucked its pieces to the convention center. It has been rebuilt and fully finished and furnished throughout the last several days. The design, by Teresa St. Amant, looks much like 1920s and '30s homes in the Twin Cities, as you can see here.

The Alexander McQueen for Target collection isn't really my thing—a bit too downtown/ hipster/ hot pink for my tastes. Instead, I think I'll be saving my pennies and putting them into a few of the beachy/seventies dresses from the Tracy Feith for Target line (Yes, that is Allie from The City modeling in the look book.).

Manuel Canovas Candles

Melissa Colgan
ManuelCanovas.png

I first came to know the name Manuel Canovas in the field of decoration—the company is the creator of some of the world's most beautiful home textiles and wall coverings. The Parisian-based company has long ranked among the best in both categories, so when I heard a while back that it was launching a home fragrance and candle collection, I knew that it would have to be in keeping with its haute design principles. Last week, while I was trolling through the Galleria, uninspired and just a wee bit upset, I stopped into Ampersand, knowing that just looking at the luxe beauty products would lift my spirit.
