Fashion isn’t really my thing (OK, I admit that I at least try to avoid wearing my blue Asics when I’m sporting pink workout clothes). You might think this would make picking out an engagement ring a much easier task, but it didn’t. After all, does one cut of stone look better with quarter-zip fleece tops and yoga pants than another? Probably not.
So, when Kevin and I started the hunt for the perfect engagement ring, it seemed only natural to think about the style of the few pieces of jewelry (if you can call the cheap stuff I own jewelry) that adorn my dresser. My style quickly became clear: simple and silver.
Looking through my box of mangled metal, I unearthed what used to be one of my favorite rings: a dingy, silver eternity band with channel-set, princess-cut white stones (likely made of some industrial plastic). That was it! Simple and silver. How hard could it be to track down an engagement ring that met those criteria?
After searching a ridiculous number of places, the answer seemed to be near impossible. I had almost given up on simple and silver, which it turned out would likely be a custom job. Seriously, who wants to pay custom prices for what should be extremely simple—and silver? I didn’t custom order the new car I purchased this summer, and it cost 10 times what I thought was an appropriate amount to spend on an engagement ring (and, no, I don’t drive a Bentley).
Enter the staff at R.F. Moeller in Edina. Kevin and I wandered in one weekend after having lunch at 50th & France. I was sure we’d be greeted with the same platitudes we’d encountered everywhere else we’d visited:
“Yes, I’m certain I don’t want a 2-carat solitaire on a platinum band accompanied by several baguettes on each side.”
“No, I don’t really have an interest in assembling an engagement ring/wedding band combo in a gigantic, gaudy setting that I will most definitely break or lose.”
“Yes, I know who (fill in the name of some recently engaged celebrity) is, but I could not care less that her fiance bought her a yellow/pink/blue (fill in a color) diamond ring.”
“No, I’m not particularly interested in incorporating my birthstone into my engagement ring. I was born in August, and I think my birthstone, Peridot, resembles a nasty shade of snot.”
Instead of rattling off all the “trends” in engagement ring fashion, they listened in a most un-judgmental way as I explained that in addition to running shoes and a gym membership, I also owned two beastly black labs who are unaware of their own heft. Then, they pointed me to a case that contained gorgeous rings that exceeded my expectations. So, what did I wind up with, you ask?
Well, I replaced the beautiful and tempting cherry Ring Pop that Kevin had purchased with a 4mm white gold band that contains 14 princess-cut diamonds that are safely and securely channel-set (and no, this is not a challenge to the hounds to see if they can manage to extract them).
When I picked up my ring, I nearly cried I was so excited. It is gorgeous and exactly what I wanted (and needed) for my lifestyle. Plus, I have a pretty good justification for an upgrade when Kevin and I celebrate our 15th anniversary. Until then, at least I don’t have to worry if it clashes with my yoga pants.
