I’ve always been a girly-girl. I loved dress-up, Barbie dolls, and just about anything involving bows, sparkles, or the color pink when I was little. So, I suppose it’s only natural that I’ve been pretty picky about my wedding-day hair, makeup, and accessories (and let’s not forget the dress). My last two appointment-filled trips to Minneapolis have included hair and makeup trials—which, by the way, is a foreign concept to both my dad and fiancé. (“What? You have to practice those things?”) I had to convince both of them I wasn’t the only bride scheduling practice runs.

I spent months searching on Pinterest, The Knot, and Google Images for hair style ideas. So, when I strolled into my first hair appointment with stylist Leah Lubbe at Juut in downtown Minneapolis, I had a stack of photos in tow. Luckily, Leah, who styles for hair shows and local media outlets, is very experienced with wedding ‘dos and picky brides. She talked me through each photo and I ended up leaving the salon with an all-up style—loose and romantic but still elegant and formal.

At my second hair trial (yes, I’ve already done two), I wanted to try something a little different, so Leah created a half-up style—curled and pinned back with some volume on top. I’m more comfortable wearing my hair down, so I think I’m leaning toward a style like this. But as with many of my wedding decisions, I’ll probably change my mind three or four times before October 20.

For my wedding-day makeup, I booked a trial appointment with Tina Beaupre who offers airbrush makeup—something I had never tried. (I actually first heard of Tina from a former Real Brides blogger!)

After setting up shop in my family’s dining room, Tina  transformed my blotchy complexion and tired eyes into a natural but camera-ready look. The benefits of airbrush are that the makeup gives complete coverage without feeling cakey, and it lasts for hours. Later that day, I put the makeup to the ultimate test by spending a few hours outside, in 90-degree temps, on my dad’s boat. (I’m pretty sure I was the only one on the St. Croix River sporting fake eyelashes.) Through sweat and water, the makeup stayed put, which is a great sign for the big day.

Next up: Deciding on hair accessories (rhinestone comb or ivory flowers?) and jewelry (eye-catching baubles or understated pearls?).
