Maybe a little bakery is just what every neighborhood needs. The girls who started a Kickstarter campaign for a new one in Lowertown think so.
Jen Lueck and Alicia Hinze will open The Buttered Tin on 7th St. (just north of Mears Park, right across the street from The Gopher Bar) on Monday Jun 17. They hope the sunny breakfast and lunch spot will be a gathering point for the many condo/apartment dwellers who are quickly populating the area.
While Alicia Hinze is a gifted cake decorator and baker (she has competed on Cupcake Wars and actually won the whole shebang with teammate Kevin Vanderaa) she’s brought in young talent Anna Berzelius, formerly of Salty Tart, to complement with more rustic, savory pastries.
And since the shop is going to offer way more than just a sugar rush, chef Jason Schellin is on the stoves. Schellin made a name for himself at Muffuletta, but left to open and helm the kitchen at Smack Shack. Now, he’s rather excited to get back to working with local producers and making connections with area farmers to create food that is fresh, seasonal, and feeds the neighborhood.
The menu includes some morning kickers such as the house hash with smoked trout, fried eggs, and horseradish chive cream; heuvos rancheros benedict with eggs and ranchero sauce on cornbread with avocado, salsa, and cilantro-lime sour cream; and a foster French toast with griddled baguette and rum flamed bananas. Even the buttermilk cakes get a lift with salted maple bacon butter. Also? Daily breakfast hot dish.
Lunchers may find an Easter Dinner Sandwich, scalloped potatoes and smoked ham with Dijon on ciabatta; an Above Average tuna melt with Albacore, olives, tomatoes, and cukes with melty Gruyere; or perhaps a braised short rib Reuben with Gouda and red cabbage. You’ll also find a fresh potted cheese of the day. Plus there’s a beer and wine menu, for you ladies of leisure.
The Buttered Tin will be open every day from 7am – 3pm, with counter service during the week and table service on weekends.
