Coming Soon: Smack Shack … The Restaurant?!

I got a little sneaky view of some plans this weekend, and wow.

Josh Thoma and partner Kevin Fitzgerald have already begun construction on the space that will be Smack Shack . . . bricks and mortar style. The full-service restaurant and bar will open on 6th & Washington Avenues in the North Loop in a long vacant warehouse that’s being totally renovated. They are building out everything which means a dream kitchen for Thoma who has been cooking out of a truck and the Nordeast’s 1029 Bar. Imagine all the shiny new space!

The plans include a 115-seat dining area with an additional 40 in a mezzanine. There’s also room for a full bar, a raw bar, and a patio in the loading dock area. They plan to use the building’s old garage-style lift doors to open the place up, and much of the exposed brick, big beams, and historic industrial touches will be maintained. All the more room for larger lobster boils.

Fear not, this does not mean the end of your lunch time food trucking tradition, both the truck and the 1029 will continue to serve Smack Shack vittles, including lobster rolls, po’ boys, and lobster mac & cheese. The new restaurant, however, will obviously have an expanded menu and more offerings. Will this be the new generation of seafood house we’ve been craving? With an opening planned for later this summer, we can only dream about the new traditions that might sprout up . . . a little pre-Twins lobster boil anyone?
