There’s been a lot of media hype that our new President is a “foodie.” He’s a regular at sophisticated Chicago restaurants such as Topolobampo and Spiaggia, and has a taste for greasy junk and soul food as well. There are photos of him chowing down in legendary Honolulu burger joints. He clearly knows good food.
So imagine my surprise when I clicked on this video [Apparently the video has been taken down, but I summarize it below.] of President Obama’s first trip on Air Force One last year. In the footage he orders dinner from the plane’s steward—a cheeseburger (adding some salad because it apparently neutralizes the fries) . . . wait . . . medium-well.
Awwww.
Our President may not be a foodie; don't let the Dijon mustard request fool you (When the steward asked whether he wanted Grey Poupon or Dijon mustard, which is like asking whether you want ketchup or catsup, the President answered "that's fine," further muddling things.). He may just be another yuppie ambivalent about eating red meat so he chooses to have it cooked until there’s no trace of it once having been flesh.
What he, and so many Minnesotans who order burgers medium-well (the default doneness in these parts), is really doing is ordering it well-done, since medium-well is a state a burger achieves for about 10 seconds during cooking and is nigh to impossible to consistently achieve. Most burgers ordered med-well arrive well-done. But our man Barack doesn’t dare to utter the words well-done because they paint him as a food rube.
The man is missing out. I bet Dick Cheney could introduce
him to the joys of medium-rare. He’s just up the freeway in McLean; probably has some Cheyenne elk loin on the grill as you read this. Lynne! Wheel me over to the pit, I don't want that elk past carpaccio!
Eat your heart out Powerline.

I'm a medium guy, but if I have to eat food on an airplane - any airplane, I would probably be pretty careful too. Airplanes breed germs, and that would lend and easy path to food/airborne illness! Raw ground beef on any plane terrifies me.
