Voter Snax

Stephanie March

flagfood.jpgDon't you think today should be a holiday? One where we all get off of work, sit around watching the returns, and have big Election Day feasts? Instead of a big formal feast, it would be a celebration of the common man and the common food: big plates of fried chicken, giant spreads of tacos, pots and pots of chili, thick burgers for days, and a few six-packs here and there.

Tonight at my house, a small group of us will gather to watch the great drama unfold. In my mind, there is no better sustenance for this than a giant, simmering pot of tomato bread soup and an egalitarian spanse of sandwich fixins. It might be a good social experiment, will the McCainsters pick the truffled cheese while the Obamists go for cheddar? Will the Libertarians bogart the prosciutto before you get there? Will the fennel spread be shunned or revered by the Green Party? All are welcome at my sandwich bar.

If you are a little too revolutionary to be invited to any parties, you'll be welcomed at Chino Latino where they have commanded Happy Hour to last all night long. From open to close, you'll be able to score $4 Donkey Punch cocktails and cheap, cheap, cheap munchies such as empanadas, mini tortas, and dollar tacos.

Let's face it, whatever happens tonight, we all need to come together as a country. What better way is there to do that than with food? Life in America is one big potluck; it's your duty to bring a dish to share. Here's my suggestion: Knowing that there is a potential for long lines, why not bring snacks for your fellow voters? I'm going to the polls armed with a tin of all-American chocolate chip cookies and a bag of candy corn mixed with peanuts because only a anarchist could resist that.

I absolutely think this should be a national holiday, so no one rushes to and from work, so I'd have time to clean my house and make my cupcakes before friends come over to watch everything unfold! Good luck (and great post!)!

Absolutely! For a long time I've felt Election Day should be a national holiday, a day which should be revered and celebrated. What other day makes you feel so truly American? (Even more so if food is involved!)
