Did you hear about this one? Vast segments of the local population have still not gotten over the loss of the long-standing local Loring Bar & Café—opened in 1986, closed in 2002, and in the middle, spawning a legendary artichoke ramekin appetizer, countless affairs between artists, and the careers of so many of today’s chef-stars, including Lenny Russo, Steven Brown, Doug Flicker, and Patrick Atanalian. Of course, it was ousted when owner Jason McLain got behind on his rent after construction expenses related to opening the Loring Pasta Bar, and the D’Amico group scooped up the space to put in Café Lurcat. But for a lot of Minneapolis artsy types it was like losing a body part, and a rather vital one at that.
So how nice that it is rising again! But who saw this coming? In Oakland. Oakland, California. The Brooklyn of San Francisco. As the Examiner put it, “Oakland’s Uptown neighborhood continues to draw restaurateurs, but it’s probably fair to say that no one expected to attract them from Minnesota.” Uh, yeah. Opening date? I heard from McLean by e-mail this week: “Almost ready to open.” So, people who still mourn the passing of the Loring: How much do you miss it? Really, really miss it? No word yet on whether they’ll be flying Scott Seekins in to hold down one end of the bar.
