We’ve all seen them, and perhaps even received one at some point: those hopelessly unfashionable gift baskets filled with unripe, out-of-season fruits; mysteriously shelf-stable meat and cheese “products;” and pre-packaged, undoubtedly stale cookie-like treats. Gift baskets get a bad rap, and for good reason. Most of the time, they are filled with edible items that no one actually wants to eat. To make matters worse, they are most often purchased with the best intentions: the gift-giver wishes to express a “thank you,” “congratulations,” or other sincere message. Truth be told, it’s not always the thought that counts. Sending a run-of-the-mill gift basket fails to convey much of anything; it might have been better to simply send a card.
All hope is not lost. At Surdyk’s we make REAL gift baskets. Jaw-droppingly exquisite, bountiful gift baskets filled with our favorite wines, artisan cheeses, local baked goods, and more. I should know, I make all of them. As Surdyk’s resident gift-basket maker, I take pleasure in putting together a custom collection of items for each and every basket that goes out our door. Believe me, custom is no joke. I’ve made and seen it all. Got a valuable client who spent a memorable family vacation in the Rhône Valley? Easy. I’d put together Châteauneuf-du-Pape, gorgeously ripe St. Marcellin, an earthy hunk of Tomme de Savoie, and rustic, housemade country pâté. How about that manly contractor who made your house the envy of the block? I’ve got it: cigars, craft beers, spicy salami, 10-year cheddar. And what to do for your oh-so-pregnant, can’t see my toes sister-in-law? McClure’s pickles, Midnight Moon Aged Goat Gouda, fresh-baked dark chocolate cookies from Rustica. Can you say craveable?
Time is valuable these days, and most of us don’t have enough of it. Relax, you’re in good hands. Give me a call at 612-676-2287 and tell me a bit about your lucky recipient. I’ll put together something fabulous for you to pick up and hand-deliver, or I can even arrange for it to be taken to their doorstep. Gift-giving is a selfless pleasure, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be easy, too. -Emily Dunne
