We’ve all seen them, and perhaps even received one at some point: those hopelessly unfashionable gift baskets filled with unripe, out-of-season fruits; mysteriously shelf-stable meat and cheese “products;” and pre-packaged, undoubtedly stale cookie-like treats. Gift baskets get a bad rap, and for good reason. Most of the time, they are filled with edible items that no one actually wants to eat. To make matters worse, they are most often purchased with the best intentions: the gift-giver wishes to express a “thank you,” “congratulations,” or other sincere message. Truth be told, it’s not always the thought that counts. Sending a run-of-the-mill gift basket fails to convey much of anything; it might have been better to simply send a card.
