Becker's Two Cents and Pizza Wars!
By Andrew Zimmern
Well, the news keeps rolling on in on the Barrio/LBV/Solera/Bar La Grass story and my sense is that the next few weeks will be the trough between the waves as this story sorts itself out. I do believe that there is more here still than meets the eye and some of it is of no interest to me at all (salacious rumor mongering) and some I am keenly interested in (who else in the company knew what and when, how will this affect the product at the restaurants, why aren't more people covering the many angles to this story etc., etc.) and will be keeping an eye out in the days and weeks to come. Last week I caught up with Isaac Becker and you should read my posts from last week as a prelude to this next graph if you haven't already.
Isaac has a simple and succinct point of view on the whole deal, just like his food-style: "Money was stolen from us. No one paid us back." Isaac is of course referring to Josh Thoma's alleged fleecing of BLG to pay bills at Solera. Thoma also is reported to have done the same at Barrio, but Becker cares to speak only about his restaurant and what went on there. Smart man. I think Isaac deserves to be as pissed off as he wants to be; the Strib even said last week that Thoma cashed in equity to pay back BLG, but Becker reminded me that real dollars, cash, was taken and he is still out real dough. He further went on to point out that Thoma was stripped of equity and fired, not the softer version being cast around town both in print and online. It's a fine point but one that is important to make a distinction on. Most importantly though Becker told me that "everything here at BLG is going great. This is, in the end, the restaurant of my dreams and I have the greatest staff in the world.” He's right. He will be fine, and so will his restaurants, despite the recent headaches.

Found this story on the corner of Ridiculous Road and Sophmoric Boulevard.
Punch Pizza, maybe the single greatest foodstuff our town offers (that's an interesting thought . . . if someone held a gun to your head and said "Quick, pick one local food that's the best single thing to eat in our cities,” what would you pick?) sells Izzy's Ice Cream at several of their pizzerias. Izzy's is also in that conversation, I would think, about best of the best, but I digress. The folks at Grand Ole Creamery, taking a page out of my five-year-old's Pre-K playbook were so outraged that Punch was selling Izzy's product just a stone's throw from the Creamery's front door that they decided to sell pizza from a space next to the scoop shop. Vengeance!!!!
Bert's opened for business yesterday at Grand Old Day and I tried a slice. It's OK, not bad, not great. Totally decent admirable stuff. But come on GOC, Punch is a restaurant, and like many they sell some high quality desserts made off premise, in this case Izzy's. In my opinion the "I'll show you . . .” attitude of opening a pizza place in a clearly moronic tit-for-tat move is juvenile behavior at best. Additionally, Izzy's and GOC both make great ice cream, but only one makes great pizza. At the end of the day, quality is all that matters.

Thanks for the tip on Bert's. I hadn't heard about them. I'll check them out this week.

Black Sheep > Punch
and in terms of best item, I will take Brasa's roast pork shoulder and yams(yes, it's 2 dishes, sosueme) over anything else in the area.

First of all, Izzy's is selling their ice cream everywhere now (at least locally) so I'm sure they have great distribution, etc. Second, but more importantly, maybe they should take this as a clue to turn it up a bit. Sometime over the past 2 years, quality has gone down although you wouldn't know it by the constant line out the door in the summer. Anyway, I live 3 blocks from GOC, I'd drive to Izzy's before I'd walk to GOC and that just makes me sad. Unfortunately, their response of selling average pizza doesn't suggest that they're thinking maybe they should improve their product... Sad.

I happen to disagree. I noticed the Pizzeria at the Creamery the last time I frequented the Grand Ole Creamery (and I do so quite often, since the ice cream is fantastic, but I digress). I have been to Punch Pizza as well, and there is nothing amazing about it. It's pizza. It's overpriced pizza. The slice I got at the GOC was delicious and reasonably priced, which is the best combination I've encountered in awhile. As for the fake rivalry described, I'm guessing that's all it is. Fake. I'm more interested in hearing about the food, not the so-called "feud."

I agree with Marie. Just happened to have eaten a pie from Bert's and must say the pizza was excellent, and reasonably priced which makes everything better. You should get the facts straight, just because Bert's is in the same building as the GOC does not mean they are affiliated and trying to compete with Punch. I actually spoke with the young man running Berts and he is in fact running a seperate operation. The GOC has nothing to gain other than his monthly payments for the lease. Good luck to him and Berts. You all shouldn't be dragging him into some feud unbeknownst to him. I highly recommend trying a slice.
(And judging by the line I saw this evening I don't think the Creamery needs to be worried that Punch is selling Izzy's product.)

I thought the pizza at Pizzeria at the Creamery was pretty darn good and I don't see it as much of a head-to-head competition with Punch.
They've dropped "Bert's" from the name, by the way.
My post on Pizzeria at the Creamery is here.

I happen to work for the family that owns the Grand Ole Creamery and the Pizzeria was NOT added on to create competition with Punch Pizza. The owners put up an ad to rent out the extra space to create extra revenue, as they are putting their 3 kids through college.
Before writing a story do your research.

The picture of Andrew featured on wikipedia.com is a picture of him at the Grand Avenue Punch Pizza. This article has biased written all over it.

Personally, I love Punch Pizza! It's different than traditional and heavy American-style pizzas.
