FRESH Ideas

By Andrew Zimmern

Here is a great idea for a movie night adventure for everyone you know. Check out FRESH, which is showing at the Riverview Theater next Wednesday, June 3rd at 7 p.m. FRESH features urban farmer/ activist Will Allen of Growing Power, the recipient of a 2008 MacArthur Genius Grant, and sustainable farmer and entrepreneur Joel Salatin of Omnivore's Dilemma fame. According to Tracy Singelton of Birchwood Cafe, “FRESH offers real-life stories of real-life local foods heroes working hard every day toward a shared vision of an American food system that is environmentally sustainable, socially just, healthy, and tastes good too!”

Tracy is a sponsor of this film, along with Twin Cities Natural Food Co-ops, Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, Land Stewardship Project, Bryant Lake Bowl, and Haberman & Associates. There will be a panel discussion following the film, and afterward, Tracy is asking everyone to head to the Birchwood Cafe to keep the conversation going. It will be open late, offering local beer specials, desserts, and small plates. Find out more event details and ticket information here, or call the Birchwood at 612-722-4474

Meritage, downtown St. Paul’s tasty little brasserie, has gone out and done a great public service in asking the now-shuttered Bayport Cookery’s chef/owner, Jim Kyndberg, to re-create his Morel Fest at the River City restaurant on Sunday, June 7. The menu draws from Bayport Cookery’s previous Morel Fests and features collaborative dishes from the two chefs. Cost is $75, and wine pairings will be available for an additional $25.

Morel consommé with smoked chicken; roasted Alaskan halibut with peas, ham, and morels; and veal tenderloin en sous vide will be served. And yes, Kyndberg’s morel ice cream takes a bow as well. Call Meritage for a table at 651-222-5670.

Interestingly enough, with Kyndberg looking for a stove to cook at more permanently, perhaps John Rupp should snap him up to run one of his properties, perhaps the University Club, where Wyatt Evans has left to take over the stove at WA Frost? Thoma and McKee are hiring everyone else in the city who can cook, so anyone opening a restaurant has to be pretty darn pro-active these days.

Comments

Dear Andrew,

Please stop chewing with your mouth open. It's boorish and sets a bad example for Americans.

Thank you,

Nicholas
