I spent the morning over at Historic Studio, which is morphing into a whole new level of wonderfulness with all the usual statement pieces and now a bigger emphasis on home accessories. I caught up with the always inspiring and energetic Robb Whittlef and saw how busy he and his crew have been collecting even more goodies from all over the world and expertly displaying them. And this week they’ve been even busier gearing up for this Saturday’s sale (Oct. 6, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 4950 W. 35th St., St. Louis Park), which, if follows suit of the last sale, will have hundreds—yes, they said HUNDREDS—of people waiting in line. I’ve got to tell you, it’s worth the wait. Not just because everything is 50 PERCENT OFF, but there’s so much inside to delight. Shoppers can score a vintage Louis Vuitton trunk, a cafe au lait leather settee, wire birdcages, cool metal pendants, armchairs, couches, mirrors, vases, pillows…price points are all over the place with some accessories on sale under $50 and others with quite a few extra zeros attached. Even if you’re browsing, you’ll love Robb’s eye, because it’s not just the stuff, it’s how he displays things.
“Im such a display junkie,” he says. “A lot of people have great stuff, they’re just not showcasing it properly. A lot of people like blue and white, but it’s so scattered throughout their house. I call it ‘design dropping’ where everything is dropped every seven feet.”
Walking around the studio is like a lesson in design, clustering your vases, mixing up your lighting, decorating your coffee table trunk, mixing mirrors and wood. Since this place is usually to-the-trade and only open to the public maybe twice a year for these sales, go early and soak it all in. Here’s a sneak peek at what you’ll see.
