Outstanding exchange

“Have an outstanding day,” the Macy’s sales associate said after giving me a refund on a bed skirt.
It felt a bit over-the-top for a young woman who was leaning on the counter when I arrived and barely mumbled hello.  So I said thanks, but couldn’t resist asking:  “Did Macy’s tell you to say that?”
“Yes.”

Glamorama build up

Expect a more dance-intensive Glamorama from Macy’s this year. “So You Think You Can Dance” choreographer Brian Friedman, who has worked with Britney Spears, Beyonce and Usher, has been brought on to produce the dance numbers. The fashion sequences will continue to be choreographed by Myron Johnson, artistic director of Ballet of the Dolls. At a kick-off event at Crave yesterday, the Macy’s…

Glamorama wrap-up

Just got home from Glamorama, nursing sore feet. Ne-Yo and Kristinia DeBarge were still partying in the VIP room when I left. They know a good party when they find it. Read my review of the show in the St. Paul Pioneer Press Saturday, Aug. 15 and tune in to Shop Girls 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on FM107.1 for tons of backstage gossip….

Model spotting in Mpls

If you feel like there are a disproportionate number of extremely tall, lithe, good looking people on Nicollet Mall this week, it's true. They're The Models. Pros from New York have descended on the Twin Cities this week to prep for Glamorama, which happens Friday at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis. More than a runway show, Glam is like a Broadway production requiring a…

Glamorama goes on

The date is set for Macy's Glamorama at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis: Aug. 14 at 8 p.m. Topping the list of designers this year: Marc Jacobs, Sonia Rykiel, Jean Paul Gaultier, Just Cavalli, Sportmax, Maxmara and CNC Costume National. And get a load of the trends: "city sophisticate," "punk princess," and "classic cowboy." Macy's is promising the usual mix of fashion, music, entertainment and…

Clinton Kelly takes charge at Southdale

Anyone who tries to pay a visit to a Macy's personal shopper at Southdale today is in for a bit of a surprise: Clinton Kelly of "What Not to Wear" and his team (it does take a team) has taken over the fitting rooms to make over 15 local women. There are assistants and racks of clothes that were pulled in advance, but you…

Makeup wipeout

In case you were thinking you still had time to swing by a department store to collect your free cosmetics, forget it – or at least, call first. Macy's in St. Paul was down to a couple of remaining products by lunch time. Bloomingdale's at Mall of America is wiped out. "It was a mob scene," a manager said. Amazing how "free" motivates us….

There ARE shoppers in downtown St. Paul!

Want to see the downtown St. Paul Macy's spring to life? Give away cosmetics. Smartly dressed women came out of the woodwork in St. Paul on Tuesday morning. Honestly, I thought I'd taken a wrong turn into Minneapolis on my way to the sorry downtown store, which is usually a ghost-town at 10:30 a.m., and could barely be called "bustling" even over the lunch hour. But…

Free cosmetics!

It's true: on Tuesday, Jan. 20, some of the biggest cosmetics counters at department stores will be giving away $175 million in products. It's part of the settlement in a class action lawsuit in which consumers claimed beauty manufacturers were fixing prices (think about it: makeup virtually never goes on sale). Estee Lauder, L'Oreal, Coty perfumes, Clarins, Chanel and Christian Dior are among the manufacturers…
