Midnight blue and see-through were big trends on the red carpet last night at the 2013 Screen Actors Guild awards, and not only because they rhyme.
One of my favorite looks of the evening stood out from the sea of column gowns. Marion Cotillard looked fantastically glamourous in Dior Couture. The volume of that gorgeous deep blue skirt was refreshing, yet so flattering, thanks to the simple white band on top. Note, too, how simple she kept her jewelry and hair.
But if you’re going to do the streamlined gown, Jennifer Lawrence was a stunner. (Not sure she needed the train?) Again, that midnight blue, or navy as we called it in the old days, was big on the carpet—a great way to stand apart from all the black, but retain the dark drama.
I’ve been hot and cold on Naomi Watts’ last few award show looks, but I thought her silver metallic embroidered Marchesa gown was breathtaking…and so easy to justify, I’m sure, when so little added bling is required. (She, like many other stars on the carpet, was wearing Christian Louboutin heels.)
Sheer fabrication—a look we’ll be seeing a lot of for spring—was a popular choice among A-listers, including Nicole Kidman and Anne Hathaway, in a black tulle Giambattista Valli dress with sheer shoulders and skirt (paired with Jimmy Choo heels). I can appreciate the way it gives her beauty some edge, but it just wasn’t my favorite. What did you think?
