From pop-up to permanent: MidModMen+friends has decided to stick around on University Avenue in St. Paul. The small but sharp shop features vintage furniture and home decor with a focus on MidCentury Modern.

“We’re having fun,” says Neal Kielar, one of four design enthusiasts and longtime collectors who opened the store in August through the St. Anthony Park Community Council’s Pop-Up Shop program, which is directed at reviving the area of University and Raymond. The MidMod owners (two have day jobs, two live 100 miles away) planned to stay three months, but found business was strong enough to sign a one year lease. “Not only is the merchandise finding a second life through restoration and resale,” Kielar says, “the store is part of University Avenue’s economic reawakening as the backbone of the new Green Line light rail corridor.”

Check it out this Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 26-27, when select merchandise will be 50 percent off (“you can only have so many walnut framed chairs,” Kielar confesses). The store, which is open weekends or by appointment, will stay open late on Saturday for a party with cupcakes, wine, and giveaways from 5 to 9 p.m. 2401 University Ave., St. Paul, 612-234-1201
