The impossibly sleek desk of Fame Executive VP and Creative Director Bruce Edwards. When pressed, he copped to papers shoved in closets.
My colleague, Delta Sky fashion editor Elizabeth Doyle, and I plan to become office crashers. We won’t bother anyone, or eat candy that isn’t ours (not much, anyway), and we are quite neat. All we ask is to be inspired by our surroundings–the furnishings, the view. Better space makes better performers. That’s our story, and we’re sticking to it.
Liz and I were struck with a massive case of office envy at a party last night (we were invited) at the downtown Minneapolis offices of Fame, a retail branding agency. Concrete floors. Open spaces. Sweeping views of the Minneapolis skyline and Target Field. Meeting rooms named for, and furnished with, design icons such as Eames. Modern art. Pops of orange. Bold pattern.

Every Fame employee puts a piece of herself in a jar--a coffee cup or hair dye or shredded credit cards. Could be a cool design element at home, too--clutter becomes art when you add clear jars and white perches.
While the others schmoozed over whiskey sours and lettuce wraps, Liz and I tried out a couple of corner offices, and found that, yep, we looked real good. So here’s our plan: Each week, we identify another amazing office space. Someone is bound to be sick or traveling, and we discretely slip into their spot and tend to our work–the work of the company that actually pays us. We will work fast, effectively, and efficiently, given all the good energy and natural light around us. So if any of our hosts requests a consult on, well, anything, we will have plenty of time and inclination to oblige. It’s the least we can do.
