Brides planning a vintage wedding in the Twin Cities have it easy thanks to a handful of shops cropping up. But that wasn’t always the case. When bride-to-be Caitlin LeVesseur set out to find one-of-a-kind charm on the cheap for her wedding, her options for rentals were few and far between. As much as she loved the search for creative pieces, how many busted up filing cabinets can one girl have?
“It’s all about the hunt for me—I love finding unique items and envisioning how they can be transformed into a purposeful conversation piece,” says LeVesseur. Combining her passion for all things retro chic and her business background, she created Antique Door Vintage Rentals in 2011. Still growing her inventory, LeVesseur photographs her stock so brides can easily flip through it online.
Her most popular items include vintage washtubs, antique typewriters, bird cages, and old soda crates. The tubs can double as drink holders, filled with ice and all your favorite beverages. The bird cages make decorative card holders. But LeVesseur’s favorite thing about vintage-themed weddings is that there really are no rules.
“There is something so magical about vintage-themed events. It is as if you are stepping out of reality and back into a place where times moves slower,” said LeVesseur, adding, “There is beauty in every detail.” That’s one reason why she doesn’t foresee the craze dying out any time soon. Comparing it to childhood games of dress-up and fairy tales, LeVesseur thinks of vintage weddings as a couple’s way to create their own dream.
And that’s where LeVesseur comes in. “I personally could spend hours searching through antique stores and flea markets,” she says. One item she’s still hunting for, old church pews. “I am obsessed with the current outdoor cathedral trend,” said LeVesseur, “Unfortunately, for the Twin Cities area, church pews are hard to get your hands on.”
She is, however, building up her collection of mix-and-match chairs for eclectic lounge spaces. Her favorite recent find is a cherry-wood shelf she can’t wait to use as a pie and dessert rack.
With the help of LeVesseur, brides can let their creativity run wild and make an event unlike any other (without the hours of sifting through odds and ends).
