Looking for do-it-yourself favor options? Try something that's as easy on the earth as it is on the eyes. Check out Seattle-based Of the Earth's plantable seed-paper box. Local newlyweds Jessica and David Zehavi filled wildflower-paper boxes with sweets for their September 2008 wedding at Beth Jacob Congregation in Mendota Heights, and they sent guests on their way with a garden treat for spring.
"People thought that our favors were really sweet and memorable," Jessica says. "They had such an organic feel to them and fit perfectly with our nature-themed wedding. I've heard from several friends that have already planted their boxes and are seeing the little flowers starting to sprout!"
She pulled it off by asking a group of six friends to help fold, fill, and tie the boxes. The project took less than two hours.
"It's quick and easy when you have help, and most people really enjoyed being involved in some of the wedding planning," says Jessica, a technology director at Beth El Synagogue in St. Louis Park. "These favors were a bit of a splurge . . . but DIY-ing so many things in our wedding allowed us to spend a bit more in certain areas. I would do it again."
Of the Earth's seed-paper boxes are available in a variety of colors, at $1.64 each. Custom-printed labels and bands are additional. Always creative, Jessica and David (a graduate student at the U of M) bought matching seed paper and biodegradable ribbon from the same website, flowerseedpaper.com.
